Building connection

At Facebook, we strive to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Our data centers help bring that mission to life by enabling billions of people around the world to connect every day.

Beyond their role as the physical backbone of our apps and services, Facebook’s data centers drive positive impact in the communities where they are located and beyond.

What is a
data center?

Facebook data centers are at work 24/7. Not only do they support our apps and services – they also support new jobs, investments in renewable energy and help schools and local communities thrive.

FAQ

Facebook’s fleet of data centers are the backbone of our platform. They power our apps and services, including Facebook, Oculus, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, making it possible to connect billions of people worldwide. In 2011, we opened our first Facebook-owned and -operated data center in Prineville, Oregon. Today, we have a total of 18 data center locations around the world, 14 of which are in the United States.

In 2011, we helped found the Open Compute Project (OCP), a community of engineers around the world whose mission is to foster more openness, more innovation and a greater focus on energy efficiency in computing technologies. The OCP community is designing infrastructure for the future, as they work on large-scale workloads and devise scalable solutions — before the problems hit the rest of the market. These solutions are then open sourced, so the entire industry can continue to build efficient solutions.

We open source our hyper-efficient hardware and data center designs through OCP in the hopes of enabling companies of all sizes to use energy more efficiently and to drive efficiency improvements across the industry.

Site selection is a multi-year, complex process that takes a number of factors into account. We look for shovel-ready sites with good access to fiber and renewable energy resources, a pool of talent for both construction and operations staff and good community partners.

We have positions for technical operations, electricians, air conditioning and heating specialists, culinary, cleaning staff, logistics staff, security and more. These are the jobs that operate a modern-day data center, and they cover a broad spectrum.

Our data centers are supported by 100% renewable energy. Facebook partners with utilities and other stakeholders to develop new, renewable energy resources on the same power grid as the data centers they support. Additionally, Facebook data centers are designed from the ground up to be among the most efficient in the world and earn LEED Gold Certification.

Our data centers are some of the most energy and water efficient data center facilities in the world. Learn more about our sustainability commitment.
